Welcome!

Hello, My name is Mr. Ng, your Career (Post Secondary) Advisor. My role at the school will be to provide you with important information regarding Post Secondary planning, scholarship applications, volunteer work opportunities, assist you with resume writing as well as help with job interview preparedness. I am also here to provide you with support with any future plans that you have, and this also includes having no definite plans at all. Please don’t hesitate to contact me by booking an appointment (I will leave a sign up sheet outside my office at both high schools) or you can also send me an email at hng@sd38.bc.ca

This Career Information weblog provides information to both Richmond and Hugh Boyd Secondary schools, so please be sure to check which school the information is referring to. This weblog will generally be useful for Grades 11 & 12; however, if you’re in grades 8 to 10 and would like to inquire and begin asking about Post Secondary planning, you may also contact me or drop in. If you’re in grade 8 or 9, it’s best that you try to do your best in what you are currently taking this year as these courses will be an excellent starting point in your future studies. You’ll get a better idea of what you’re good at and which courses are suitable for you by the time you’re in grade 10. In the meantime, you’re more than welcome to ask me anything that relates to Post Secondary studies beyond high school.

Grade 12 – For up to date news on upcoming Post Secondary events/workshops/webinars, scholarships, volunteer work please visit your MS TEAMS page. Be sure to check out the News page on this weblog as I am updating this page with upcoming events and news that relates to many of you. Don’t forget to scroll down to the appropriate months on the “News” page on this weblog. If you’re searching for scholarships, be sure to check the calendar on the “Scholarships” page. This calendar is updated on a regular basis. Allow plenty of time to prepare for scholarships by looking ahead on the calendar. If you require any help, by all means….ask. I will be more than happy to offer any advice or to answer any questions.

Grade 11 – Be sure to check for any upcoming Post Secondary events/workshops/webinars and volunteer work on this weblog. This year will also be very important for all of you as you decide which courses to take… that will allow you to get into the Post Secondary (University/College/Trades(technical) Institute) of your choice. Be involved in sports, clubs, volunteer/work to build your resume with life/school experiences; this will help your future applications to Post Secondary schools and future jobs.

Grade 10 – Get an early start on your future after high school. It’s an excellent time to begin your volunteer experience. There are many opportunities to get involved either with your school or in your community. You can also join a club(s) at your school (RHS has over 40 clubs to choose from- Hugh Boyd have about 12 clubs that you can join). Stay active by joining a team sport; both RHS and HBS have an excellent variety of Team sports you can join. Being interactive and active in the above mentioned will help you develop your confidence (socially, physically and mentally), and will also look impressive on your resume and when the time comes to apply for Post Secondary or when you’re searching for a job. Your grade 10 year will also be a crucial (important) year as you decide what courses to take for next year (grade 11). You will find out that the courses that you’re currently taking may or may not be your ideal courses, but this is a great way of knowing which courses you enjoy taking and avoid ones that you don’t like. If you’re curious about a course (or courses) and would like more information on them, it would be a good idea to speak to your guidance counselor.

Good Luck with your studies and your Post Secondary planning !!!
